Living & Working in the Midwest

Sinosteel Midwest has a strong commitment to the communities in which it lives and works, supporting the natural environment and social fabric of those communities while providing sustainable benefits and employment opportunities where possible.
The company recognises the importance of nurturing community understanding of its activities and the need to share its success with local participants. We employ a dedicated full-time Community Relations Manager.

Sinosteel Midwest current directly employs over 100 people in Perth and the Mid West region. The Koolanooka/Blue Hills Project is expected to bring very significant direct employment opportunities for more than 70 additional people in the Mid West region, with important social and economic flow-on benefits to the region. The Weld Range Project will increase these numbers to over 1,000 during construction and over 300 during operation. Indirect employment of many thousands will help sustain and grow the region.
Sinosteel Midwest will contract out earth-moving, crushing, screening, trucking and transport needs, so the majority of jobs will be provided through contracting partners. Contracts will be assessed and awarded on a fair and equitable basis, and will be announced publicly.

A high ratio of the company’s employees in the Mid West region, are Aboriginal staff and sub-contractors. Training and development of Aboriginal employees is an important focus for Sinosteel Midwest’s operations.

The economic success of all projects in the Mid-West region underpins the development of crucial infrastructure projects, most notably the timely development of the Oakajee port and rail project. The Oakajee Port project is, in part, a major investment by the WA State and Federal governments.
Infrastructure is vital to the region developing its potential and there needs to be certainty about its development. As a major user of this infrastructure, Sinosteel Midwest will consult with Government on what will work best.
